In world where we are inundated by hundreds of the same products and goods, life can seem fairly monotonous at times. But through this lack of variety there will always be the few that stand out. Collectible decanters pride themselves on their unique aesthetic. Many subjects have been commemorated as a decanter. Everything from the Kentucky Derby to the 57 Chevy Bel-Aire, from Paul Bunyan to Elvis. There are decanters of wildlife, firemen, telephones, fraternal organizations, Southwest subjects and even cat houses. Some come with music boxes, some with wooden bases or displays and others.

With such a wide variety of decanters you’re bound to find one that captures your interest. Collectible liquor decanters come in an array of styles and sizes big and small. Very rarely do company’s reveal the release information of these collectibles, which is why they are most often limited editions. This means one of two things, they are produced for a limited time period, or the company announced a specific quantity they will produce. This creates a sense of scarcity and drives sales up but it is supply and demand that ultimately determines how rare or not rare each collectible becomes. Starting as a profit building business technique for wineries and distilleries to sell extra product, it became a hobby for thousands of collectors. These collectibles can usually be found at your local spirit shop.
Whether or not your collection is valuable, it is important to properly maintain it. Most collectible decanters are made of porcelain, china, or glass, therefore they are very fragile and even dust could ruin them over time. But with adequate care, these delicate decanters will last for thousands of years. It is important to note what decoration on the decanter, if any, is sensitive enough to be washed away. Otherwise, a thorough dusting and cleaning with warm, soapy, non-abrasive water to keep it in pristine condition. Sometimes hard to reach stains do come about on the inside of the decanter. In this situation often times the best thing to do is to place tiny bits of ice in the decanter and swirl vigorously until the stain disappears. Also, you have to consider the type of cork used on your decanter. If it actually made of cork, it is important to keep it moisturized to prevent from cracking and chipping in the decanter.
Collectible decanters tend to last for a long time, although they don’t appreciate in value much. The demand of collectible decanters has gone down. Though the there is still a demand for your standard crystal decanters. It seems that companies aren’t really capitalizing on collectible decanters anymore. That is most likely a function of the market and lack of passionate collectors. So while decanter/bottle collecting isn’t what it once was there is still a certain appreciation for the classics. Between decanters, flasks, shot glasses, there are many options as to what to collect. But collectible decanters are classic and are a good reflection of the times, giving them an extra level of appeal.
